In a monumental move in the music industry, Katy Perry has reportedly brokered a deal selling her music catalog to Litmus Music for an astounding $225 million, according to Billboard. This landmark deal encompasses Katy Perry’s stake in the royalties and music publishing rights to all her albums released from 2008 to 2020, a period during which the artist created some of her most iconic works.
The "Teenage Dream" singer's deal with Litmus Music notably surpasses Justin Bieber’s earlier sale of his catalog to Hipgnosis Songs Capital, which was settled at $200 million. Among the albums included in Perry’s sale is the 2010 blockbuster “Teenage Dream”, a collection that features a series of hits and has sold over nine million copies to date.
Dan McCarroll, co-founder of Litmus Music, expressed his honor and excitement in re-partnering with Perry, reminiscing about the times when he served as the president of her record label. In a statement to Billboard, McCarroll lavished praise on the pop icon, stating, “Katy Perry is a creative visionary who has made a major impact across music, TV, film, and philanthropy. I’m so honored to be partnering with her again and to help Litmus manage her incredible repertoire.”
Katy Perry, whose illustrious career spans numerous chart-topping albums and songs, has also carved out a niche for herself in television, most recently serving as a judge on ABC's “American Idol.” As fans eagerly await her return for the show's 2024 season, Perry is currently rounding off her Las Vegas residency.
Her most recent album, "Smile," was released in 2020, adding to the rich catalog of music that has now moved to Litmus Music’s portfolio. The portfolio comprises a rich tapestry of hits that have defined a generation, offering a melodic journey through the artist's growth and explorations in the music landscape.
As Katy Perry embarks on this significant new chapter in her musical journey, industry insiders and fans alike will be keen to see how Litmus Music stewards the rich legacy contained in Perry's vast and colorful music catalog. This transaction not only signifies a lucrative financial move but also marks the entrustment of a decade-spanning musical narrative to Litmus Music, opening avenues for fresh reinterpretations and reintroductions to newer generations.
